How do mental skills apply outside of sport?


Mental skills commonly taught in sport psychology and mental performance can be highly applicable outside of the sporting context. Truthfully, they are applicable EVERYWHERE because when it comes down to it, EVERYONE is a performer in some way, shape, or form! Here's how some of these skills can be utilized in various areas of life: 


1.   Education (Kids, Adults, & Teachers in School):

  • Goal Setting: Students can learn to set academic goals, such as improving grades or mastering specific subjects, and develop action plans to achieve them.

  • Attentional Focus: Techniques to improve concentration and block out distractions can enhance learning and academic performance.

  • Stress Management: Students can use stress management techniques to cope with academic pressure, manage test anxiety, and promote overall well-being.

  • Resilience Building: Teaching resilience skills and growth mindset helps students navigate challenges, setbacks, and transitions in their academic journey, fostering perseverance and adaptability.


2.   Tactical Populations (Military, Law Enforcement, First Responders):

  • Goal Setting: Setting mission objectives and action plans to achieve them is critical for tactical operations and mission success.
