The elite performer's relationship with failure can impact not only performance, but also motivation, confidence, effort, resilience and mindset.
Failure (and the way we view it) is a pillar of growth mindset: the belief that a person's capacities and talents can be improved over time.
In turn, growth mindset is a pillar of peak performance. By cultivating a healthy relationship with failure, the elite performer can unlock optimal outcomes and satisfaction.
Here are a few questions you should be asking yourself:
Do I learn from failure?
Do my failures define me?
How does my perception of failure influence my motivation and confidence levels? Do I tend to lose confidence and motivation after experiencing setbacks, or do I use failure as fuel to work harder?
Do I tend to compare myself to others when I experience failure? How does comparison impact my self-esteem and willingness to persevere in the face of challenges?
What positive outcomes have occurred in my life due to failure?
How well do I bounce back after failure and what tactics do I use?
Remember, failure is a faithful attempt in learning. FAILURE ISN'T FINAL. Reflecting on how you deal with failure is an important self-awareness tool to get better at doing hard things.
